Here in 1864, Gen. William T. Sherman attacked the army of Gen. Joe Johnston. Unable to penetrate the southern lines, Sherman withdrew and Johnston fell back to a better defense of Atlanta.

The fiercest fighting at Kennesaw Mountain took place here on Cheatham Hill where Federal forces attacked the two best divisions General Joseph Johnston had. The Northerners lost 3,000 men, the Confederates 800.
