A Vast Sea of Misery
During the 14 months Andersonville existed, over 45,000 Federal prisoners of war were confined here and more than 13,000 died. In August 1864, more than 32,000 were imprisoned here together.

Guard Duty
Cannons and troops were positioned around the stockade to deter escape and guard against enemy cavalry attacks. Many of the guards were young boys and old men.

Stockade Branch
This branch provided the prison's main source of water, which soon became too contaminated to drink due to the overcrowded conditions.

The Dead Line
A reconstructed portion of the stockade shows the infamous "deadline." Any prisoner who touched the barrier would be shot by a guard.
